At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
