European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
