Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
