Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
